Danny K wins first
All Africa Poker Celebrity Charity Challenge
R100 000 donated to Compassionate Friends
After a nail-biting
showdown with Alex Jay, pop sensation Danny K won the first-ever All Africa
Poker Celebrity Charity Challenge, sponsored by Piggs Peak Casino,
Swaziland, held last night in the 33rd-floor penthouse of Johannesburg’s
Michelangelo Towers.
Around 100 of South
Africa’s movers and shakers gathered in the majestic three-level apartment
to watch celebrities – including Leanne Manas, Sandy Ngema, Neil Andrews,
Mark Fish, Kass Naidoo, Joost van der Westhuizen and Phumlani Msibi – play
it out for R100 000 to be donated to a charity of the winner’s choice. In a
heartfelt speech, Danny K dedicated his R100 000 win to Compassionate
Friends, a free grief-counselling service, in memory of his late younger
brother. Second runner-up Alex Jay received R25 000 to donate to the
Sunflower Fund.
Seen cutting loose,
surrounded by sweeping 360-degree views over Africa’s City of Gold, were
pop star Tamara Dey; cricket legend Brett Schultz; über-stylist Jenny
Andrew; hotelier James Peech; TV and radio personality Lindsay Vine; ‘lord
of the blings’ jeweller Oresti Mavrodaris; restauteur Ria Pappas; De Beers’
new marketing manager, Thoko Modisakeng; and David and Jennifer Moss, from
Picot & Moss, who donated a Tag Heuer watch to winner Danny K.
The charity aspect
adds a polished South African spin to a high-profile sport that’s sweeping
the world by storm. The All Africa Poker Celebrity Charity Challenge
perfectly packages poker as a sport that mixes skill, glamour, fun and charity
– with feel-good, win-win results for players, spectators and charities.
The event will be televised on All Africa PokerZone, South Africa’s
dedicated new poker channel, DSTV Channel 121, which goes live from 17th
July.
