In Blackjack cards have their face value with all picture cards having a value of 10. An ace can be counted as either 1 or 11 (you can choose). The idea is to try and get your total (the sum of the value of all your cards) as close to 21 as possible without exceeding 21 (if you exceed 21 you go bust and lose your bet). Otherwise if your hand beats the dealer’s hand then you win (receiving an amount equal to your original bet) or if the dealer’s hand beats your hand then you lose your bet. If it is a draw it is called a push and your bet is carried over to the next hand. Normally if you get a Blackjack (an Ace and a 10) then your winnings are paid at a higher ratio of 3:2 instead of 1:1. As a player you are able to see the dealer’s one up card however the dealer waits for the player(s) to finish making their decisions before drawing further cards. Normally the rules require the dealer to continue drawing cards until the dealer has 17 or higher (regardless of the player’s hand).
